Art Size Guide - how to choose the right artwork size

How to choose the right artwork size for your space

Choosing the right artwork size is just as important as choosing the artwork itself.
The perfect size helps a painting feel balanced within a room, enhances the atmosphere, and allows the artwork to truly unfold its emotional impact.

This guide will help you find the right size for your space — easily and intuitively.

1. Why size matters

An artwork is not only something you look at — it’s something you feel.
If a piece is too small, it can get lost.
If it’s too large, it may feel overwhelming.

The right size creates:

  • visual balance

  • calm and harmony

  • a natural connection between art, furniture, and space

2. General rule of thumb

A good guideline is:

The artwork should cover around 60–75% of the width of the furniture below it.

For example:

  • Sofa width 200 cm → artwork approx. 120–150 cm wide

  • Sideboard width 160 cm → artwork approx. 95–120 cm wide

This creates a calm and intentional look.

3. Small artworks (up to 40 × 40 cm)

Perfect for:

  • shelves and consoles

  • bedside tables

  • gallery walls

  • smaller rooms or corners

Effect:

  • subtle, intimate, personal

  • ideal for adding soft accents and details

Tip:
Small artworks look especially beautiful when combined in pairs or as part of a curated gallery wall.

4. Medium artworks (approx. 50 × 50 cm to 80 × 100 cm)

Perfect for:

  • above sideboards or desks

  • home offices

  • bedrooms

  • smaller living rooms

Effect:

  • balanced and calming

  • present without dominating the space

This size works wonderfully if you want the artwork to be noticeable, but still feel light and harmonious.

5. Large artworks (from 100 × 80 cm and larger)

Perfect for:

  • above sofas or beds

  • large walls

  • open living spaces

Effect:

  • strong emotional presence

  • creates depth and atmosphere

  • becomes a focal point of the room

Large artworks allow colors, textures, and movement to fully unfold — ideal for creating calm, flow, and visual grounding.

6. Orientation matters

  • Horizontal formats work well above sofas, beds, and long sideboards

  • Vertical formats suit narrow walls, hallways, or accent areas

  • Square formats feel calm and balanced, perfect for modern interiors

7. Still unsure? Visualize first

A simple trick:

  • cut paper or cardboard in the artwork size

  • tape it to your wall

  • step back and observe

This helps you feel whether the size works for your space.
